Cyberport Animation Camp is one of the largest digital media development events in this year. Sponsored by Autodesk, Inc., a world leader in 2D and 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, and co-organized by Cyberport IncuTrain Centre and supported by Mayan Hong Kong Maya User Group, leaders of the animation world including Imagi Studio, Lucasfilm Animation Singapore, Rhythm & Hues Studio and Rising Sun Pictures are invited to be the key speakers of the Camp. The camp will gather all industry practitioners focusing on animation production soft skills upgrade in areas of character design, story design, and features animation. It is aiming to bring the local animation production skills and quality to the next level.
 
   
       
 
數碼娛樂培訓營2009由全球最大的二維、三維數位化設計和工程軟件公司Autodesk(Autodesk Inc.)主辦,香港數碼港IncuTrain 聯合主辦,並得到瑪雅人—香港瑪雅用戶群,以及香港數碼港管理有限公司全力支持,將於12月12日假香港數碼港舉行,開於予公眾人仕參,使成為本年度最大型數碼娛樂發展活動之一。主辦單位邀請世界級動畫界翹楚,包括意馬國際動畫公司(IMAGI)、盧卡斯電影公司(Lucas film)、美國著名特效工作室Rhythm & Hues及澳洲特技製作公司 Rising Sun Pictures代表來港,提供大型講座予本地年青人、中小企業及專業人才,為匯聚全港動畫界精英一起學習交流,藉此提昇本地動畫製作專才與企業的技藝水平和知識,激發香港發展更優質的數碼創意產業。

How is Feature Film Animation Process
Tim Cheung,
Vice President – Animation, Imagi Studios

Tim Cheung is Vice President - Animation of Imagi. Mr. Cheung oversees the animation for all of the Company's CGI feature films and manages the studio's 400+ Hong Kong-based animators. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Cheung had worked at DreamWorks for 12 years, where he had earned a reputation as one of the world's top CGI animators, and had received acclaim for his contributions to the Academy Award®, Oscar® winning Shrek trilogy as directing animator, supervising animator and head of character animation, respectively. Mr. Cheung was also a senior animator on Antz, and wrote and directed two award-winning shorts: 1995's Rolling Stone and 1997's Gabola the Great.

 
   
       
  How to Solve Lighting and Compositing Challenges in Animation

Lighting and Compositing Supervisor, Star Wars™: The Clone Wars™, Lucasfilm Animation Singapore

Founded by George Lucas in 1971, Lucasfilm Ltd. is one of the world's leading fully-integrated film and entertainment companies. Lucasfilm’s studio in Singapore - Lucasfilm Animation Singapore – produces digital animated content for film and television, visual effects for feature films and multi-platform games. Recent projects include the CG animated TV series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS and the Star Wars™ The Clone Wars™: Jedi Alliance™ game for the Nintendo DS platform.

Benjamin Huber is originally from Basel, Switzerland. Benjamin joined Lucasfilm Animation Singapore in 2006 as matte painter for the first season of the CG animated TV series Star Wars™: The Clone Wars™. He was then promoted to lighting and compositing lead in 2007-2008, then lighting and compositing supervisor for the highly-rated show, now on its second season.

 
   
       
  An Insider Look at Animation Production
Markus Kurtz,
Production Technology Manager, Rhythm & Hues Studio

With more than 13 years of production experience in visual effects, Markus Kurtz serves as production technology manager at Rhythm & Hues Studios in Los Angeles, a position he has held since 2007. Markus interacts closely with all of the studio’s productions and technology teams to design solutions based on their current production needs and future technology goals. Markus has been actively involved in such recent movies as "Night at the Museum" “Land of the Lost,” “Fast & Furious,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor."

Previously, Markus worked as a digital effects supervisor at Rhythm & Hues and CG supervisor at Digital Domain. His many film credits include “Titanic," "Lord of the Rings," "Happy Feet” and “Superman Returns.”

Markus holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University for Arts and Industrial Design, in Linz, Austria.

 
   
       
  The Character of VFX: a Behind-the-scenes Look
Daniel Thompson,
3D artist & Lighting TD, Rising Sun Pictures

Rising Sun is a leading film visual effects company with offices in Adelaide & Sydney, Australia. Fourteen years of collaboration with the industry's top filmmakers has seen Rising Sun's filmography grow to exceed sixty feature films. Long time contributors to the highly successful Harry Potter franchise [/The Goblet of Fire, The Order of the Phoenix and The Half-Blood Prince/] they are currently working on The Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 as well as Peter Weir's The Way Back.

Rising Sun work released in theaters this year includes Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Watchmen. This presentation will give a behind-the-scenes look at Rising Sun's innovative use of Autodesk's products with some specific examples from recent blockbusters.

Daniel Thompson has been with Rising Sun Pictures for the past 3 years.
Daniel has used his generalist skills for many duties such as previsualisation, character setup, lighting, modelling and texturing on projects such as Harry Potter, Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Speed Racer, Australia, The Ruins & Superman Returns. He completed a Master of Arts Degree in Digital Media at The Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney, Australia. The two year degree was highly collaborative and allowed him to work with directing, producing and cinematography students and have hands-on experience in all facets of the film making process. Whilst at AFTRS, Daniel developed a motion control solution that allowed camera information to seamlessly travel from Autodesk Maya to onset. Prior to Film School, Daniel was a freelance TV editor, as well as working on numerous short films.
